Geographical description:

The communities are located in the Capachica District, Province and Region of Puno in southern Peru. Llachon is 74 Km. Northeast from Puno, 3812 meters above sea level, 15º 72’ southern latitude and 69º 76’ east longitude. The community of Llachon has close to 500 families and Santa Maria 40 families. The land is a bit irregular due to its being a peninsula entering into Lake Titicaca. This area contains diverse and singular characteristics of living culture, biodiversity, and archaeological resources, besides having beautiful white sandy beaches contrasting with the lake’s crystal clear waters.

History:

Remains from the Tiahuanaco culture, such as terraces, chullpas (funeral towers), and archaeological centres can still be seen. Like witnesses, they remind us of the great importance communities had in the development of Peru’s history. The peninsula was founded with the name of San Salvador de Capachica upon the arrival of the Spanish conquistadores to Puno. It is said that it was in thanks for being saved from a ship wreck on a totora reed boat after many prayers.

Climate:

The Llachon and Santa Maria communities have a cold and humid climate, which varies according to the influence of Lake Titicaca. Annual rainfall varies between 00 and 580 millimetres. It is characterized by a marked rainy season (December to March) and a dry season due to scant rainfall (April to November). Average annual temperature varies from 8º a 12º C.

Lake Titicaca:

“The second largest lake in South America” and “highest navigable lake in the world” has an area of 8,562 square kilometres, is 3,810 meters above sea level and is located between Peru and Bolivia. According to voices from the past, the Sun god sent forth from the lake the first couple who would set the bases for the Tawantinsuyo Empire. The lake is a refuge for a diversity of birds and fish such as the carachis, ispis, bogas, umantos, suches (in danger of extinction), pejerreyes and trout. There is also a variety of flora. On Lake Titicaca we will find various islands, come of which are artificial islands built from totora reeds
